Operation Pay back and Assange - Rise of a new world order or just a blip in the radar?

I am not sure why the hue and cue about wikileaks is being raised. It just reminds me aboutstory of the emperors new clothes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor%27s_New_Clothes

I dont think we are naive enough to think that the politicians are straight forward, honest blah... blah... When was politics all about playing straightforward. It has always been a mix of cunningness and ruthlessness without which the world of politics will not exist.

Most of the information that has been leaked has already been in the know how and speaken in a hush hush manner. Wikileaks was just audacious enough to stand up and tell hey Mr.Emperor here is the mirror and look you are naked. This has shamed the emperor because it has touched upon the collective consciense of normal people like you and me. They cant preach the good values of beinghonest to us. Now if every one of us become cunning than there will not be any plance for politicians and they are scared about that. It is not that they did not know they were walking naked, it was just that they were bold, because they wearing the condoms called power.

What Assange has done is that he has removed the condoms from the power dicks. Poor guy never had a good luck with condoms. How naive of him, even after reading through the GB's of classified data he did not know that when you screw up without protection cover you will be charged with rape.

One question that has been ranking in my mind was who will take action against those whose crimes far more serious has been exposed by wikileaks. I am sure they will walk free as they are well protected with condoms all around them.

But when I heard about #operationpayback a counter attack launched by internet activists as a revenge on Amazon, PayPal, PostFinance, MasterCard and Visa for either stopping services or freezing donations to WikiLeaks, some due to political pressures it signalled to me the emergence of new age warriors who will not bow down to these power dicks. Maybe this will die off soon but it has clearly rung the warning bells of what to expect in future.

But sadly the people who are going to suffer because of this attack is not the likes of Amazon or Paypal nor the political class but the commoner who does business on these platforms.

I am not sure how many of these "internet activist" had sex without condoms, but I seriously expect some to come on news tomorrow.

Economics of stimulus package...

Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100  on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night.

As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveller will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100  and leaves. No one produced anything.  No one earned anything.  However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a Stimulus Package work, so please feel free to send me the stimulus package. Your money will return to you safely :-)

State of justice in India

Had a firey discussion with friend on state of law in India...

Epic 1 - Indian law - Thousand criminals can escape but one innocent should not be punished.... But when thousand criminals escape thousand innocents are punished...

Epic 2 - SC questions Manmohan Singh on delay in response to Swamy's question. Who will question court for the delay in justice they are providing...

Media scams... Raj T.V.

It was a thursday night and I was scanning through channels and there was a show called "Cinema Theriyuma" in Raj T.V. They had done a shoddy photoshop work of Ajith and Trisha by merging their faces. Anyone who watches any of the tamil channels will not find it tough to spot it out. Surprisingly the hosts were screaming at the top of lungs asking people to call up 5664426 and tell the name of the actor and actress and win Rs.40,000.

I complete the first round of scanning the channels and was back to this show after five minutes and saw that still no one had been able to get the right answer and the show hosts were literally begging someone to call up and answer and win the price money. Now it got me curious because I was surprised that no one was able to answer the question.

There were two things that striked me

1) There were no one watching RAJ T.V and hence there was no one to call them up

2) It was my lucky day to win 40,000 over a phone call

The catch was that I will have to call from my mobile phone and I will be charged Rs.10 per minute. I decided to go ahead and test my luck. I thought it was my lucky day as I already had survived what could have been a major accident that day without even a scratch. I called up the number and I was put on hold with an automated voice talking crappy stuff. Within few seconds of making the call I sensed something was wrong as the hosts were literally begging people to call them and answer and here I was put on hold.

I waited for five minutes and surprisingly no one got a chance to speak to the host. That meant I had burnt Rs.50 by than. Now I got the entire scheme of scam. I am sure atleast few hundred people would have called this number and burned out the Rs.10 per minute from their mobiles and this seemingly little money of would have accumulated to a decenet sum.

I am not sure who is behind this show but I can only tell this... Eppadi ellam emathranga paaruya...

It is time to put our acts together and demand number portability...

I have been suggested by all my friends and well wishers who should have been fed up by now about my constant ranting of Aircel http://bit.ly/cvgQwy to change my mobile service provider instead of fighting these corporate thieves. That did sound like an easy way out but wait….

This is number has been my mobile identity for more than five years that means it has left an impression in lot of places that I remember of and that I don’t remember of. This is the number to which I get bank alerts, credit card alerts, subscriptions alerts, online registrations alerts, messages and calls from all those places I have made an impression. Now how do I change in all those places?

Today when I call an inquiry service the operator greets me by my name, thanks to the impression my mobile number has already made in their database. Today when I call my call taxi provider he sends the taxi to my residence without asking for address because of the mobile impression that has been already made and tomorrow I don’t want a call taxi standing in front of my house when someone else calls up from my number.

In the last few years I have met with hundreds of people and I have lost touch with few but once in a while I do get that surprise calls asking me to identify who they are? Now how do I reach to all those wonderful people and tell them I have changed my number because a ruthless telecom company wanted to cheat me.

Running away has never been a permanent solution to a problem and how many times have we been forced to change the number just because we hated the service of a service provider and how many contacts have we lost in the process.

I don’t want to give away my mobile identity just because a mobile service provider decided to screw me up. I believe this number I own is important to me. I believe this identity that has been registered at various places is important for me.

I have tried all the channels for more than a year now. I have been regularly asking Aircel customer support to provide me with proper bills when more than a years effort failed, I approached the nodal officer and in the last three weeks they promised me uninterrupted service till my issue was resolved only to disrupt it thrice and finally I reached out to the appellate authority and what does he do he promises the same only to break it within hours…

For all those who were praying for number portability good news is the October 31st deadline will be further delayed because DOT does not have the spine to ensure mobile companies adhere to the deadlines that has been postponed many times. TRAI wants DOT to show some spine and act upon these erring telecom companies.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/news/telecom/BSNL-MTNL-may-delay-No-portability-Trai-/articleshow/6204730.cms

If you believe your number is an identity of yours, please join the “Allow us to keep our number” facebook group because TRAI wants DOT to act tough to ensure telecom companies implement number portability and our system only acts when they know they are being watched.

Please do tweet it and share it with your friends in Facebook if you believe the number that connects you to the rest of the world is important for you and you don’t want to run around places like me when a telecom company decides to screw your happiness.

Eight key take away from Patch Adams....

Eight key take aways from Patch Adams movie apart from how much humor and caring means...

Conditioned minds

We are real individual. Then somewhere along the way we are drawn to conform. It is as if we are conditioned by programmed responses. But sometimes you can alter the programmed response...  just by changing some of the conditions, altering the parameters. The goal is to break thru programmed responses by changing normal parameters... and getting a new emotional response from the person.

Death

The last breath. Paying a debt to nature. The big sleep. God's way of saying "Slow down" To check out. To shuffle of this mortal coil. To head for the happy hunting ground. To blink for an exceptionally long period of time. To find oneself without breath.

A new approach to facing problems

They helped me realize that by helping them i could forget my own problems. And I did. I really helped some of them and for the first time in my life I forgot my own problems.

Love

I love you without knowing how...

or from when or from where.

I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride.

I love you because I know no other way than this.

So close that your hand on my chest is my hand.

So close that when you close your eyes...

I fall asleep.

Conversation with god

So what now, huh,

What do you want from me?

Yeah i could do it.

We both know you wouldnt stop me

So answer me, please.

Tell me what you are doing.

Okay let's look at the logic.

You create man

Man suffers enormous amounts of pain

Man dies.

Maybe you should have had just a few more brainstorming sessions... prior to creating.

You rested on the seventh day.

Maybe you should have spent that day on "compassion"

You know what.

You're not worth it.

Everyone can be a Doctor

Everyone is in need of some form of physical or mental help. They are patients. But also every person who comes to the ranch is in charge of taking care of someone else... Whethere its cooking for them, cleaning them... or even as simple a taks as listening. That makes them doctors. I use that term broadly but us not a doctor someone who helps someone else? Doctors offer counsel and hope.

Indifference

What is wrong with death sir? What are we so mortally afraid of? Why cant we treat death with a certain amount of humanity and dignity and decency... and god forbid, maybe even humor? Death is not the enemy gentlemen. If we are gonna fight a disease, let's fight one of the most terrible disease of all... "INDIFFERENCE"

Cultivate friendship

Transference is inevitable, sir. Every human being has an impact on another. Dont let them numb you out to the miracle of life. Always lvie in awe of the glorious mechanism of the human body. Let that be the focus of you studies and not a quest for grades... Dont wait till you are on the ward to get your humanity back. Start your interviewing skills. Start talking to strangers. Talk to your friends. Talk to wrong numbers, everyone. And cultivate friendships...

Hei god asked me to pass this message to you

After my previous conversation with god, I frequently bumped upon him and what do two jobless guys do when they meet, just chatter time away and that is what we do the best.

One day I found him in a sober mood and asked him what happened? He vented up his feeling and said that everyone wants me to do this and do that but they don’t understand that I cant do anything. Why don't you humans become god for a day, for an hour or at least for a moment by doing what you expect me to do.

The next time you see someone in trouble why don’t you help them, next time you see someone in pain why don’t you try to sooth it a bit. The next time you see someone begging in the road why don’t you buy him a meal, The next time you see a stray dog with hunger why don’t you feed it, the next time you see dry a plant why don’t you pour a glass of water. That is what you expect me to do right? Why don’t you do these things, so that there will be less number of people cursing me.

So this was the message from him “Be God for a moment” do the smallest of things you can without expectation of any return or favor, not even a appreciation, not even a word of thanks, not even a smile just do it and walk off and erase the memory of everything that you did for that moment, for that hour, for that day. Your life may not become more beautiful, your life may not change but you would have changed some ones for sure and to him you will be the god. Yep, there will one person lesson cursing god too, pun not intended.

This was a conversation I had sometime back but did not bother to share it with anyone except for a close friend of mine, partly because he is one guy who is able to put up with my entire nuisance. Than something interesting happened…

Free Hugs - Hug the world, Spread the love…

When you open your arms you open your heart, when you open your heart you open up love and when you open up love go hug the world and spread it. That is what free hugs is all about.

The world has become a tougher place to live in thanks to all the walls we have built. These walls do not allow us to see beyond what we want to see, they do not allow us to share what we have in plenty but when we break these walls the world becomes a lovely place to live in.

Free hugs is to break those walls that we have built around ourselves which does not allow us to share the love each one of us is blessed with in abundance. I could see the different kinds of walls people build around when the “Free Hugs” campaign kicked off at the Beasant Nagar beach.

There were very few without any walls, there were few who broke it instantly, there were few who really wanted to break it but had to be tempted, there were few who wanted to but did not have the will power to do so and there were few who were literally scared of breaking the walls; but it was very clear, deep inside each one of us want to love and be loved.

Maybe everything about the world will change with that hug of yours or may be not; but something about you will change for sure. Go, try it now.

The best place to start will be at your home, when was it you last hugged your mom and dad, the siblings of yours, your better half, your kids, your grandpas and grandmas, the aunts, uncles and cousins, friends, colleagues and if you dare to the stranger who walks by you and needs that big hug of yours to lighten up his world. Should you not find anyone to hug give me a call.

If you think this is all farce, look at the smiles in the photos below and judge it for yourself. Why don’t you try it too, it costs nothing, it is after all free.

Hugs to you all…

P.S:  And to all those sweet enemies out here ready with a comment if this is an attempt to hug all the women out here; yeah they get a special offer 1+1 absolutely free ;-)

Build your applications in a way that they can scale up...

Building a scalable application is a real challenge. A lot of nightmares can be saved if you have your basic architecture right when the applications scale up. We are prepared for failure but often not for success. I am collecting a list of useful links on building successful applications. Please share them with a tweet to @2rams to be included here.

The Future of Facebook will depend on...

With great power comes greater responsibility, remember the Spiderman. Today Facebook is exactly in the same scenario. As it aspires to be the super power of the web it needs to understand it has got greater responsibility than before to its users. Some of the key issues to the future of Facebook will decide on how it deals with

Security and stability: With more than 400 million users as on date and growing at a astronomical rate when so much of personal data is entrusted with a company like Facebook, is the data safe and secure. What if for one day Facebook goes down, will all the sites built on this ecosystem also go down?

Privacy: The privacy settings of Facebook is something that many are not comfortable with. All the details about a user are open for access to any site or application, worse even their friends data are shown up. Even if you have set high privacy settings details about you could be obtained when your friends sign up or register to a site. Assume one of your friends goes to a porn or gambling site than the site will have access to your data also, sounds scary right!

Hackers: With so much of monetizable data Facebook is always going to be a target for hackers. Even a small glitch in it can create chaos. Facebook had to recently shut down its chat system after it emerged private conversations were visible to other users. Any user was able to view the live chats of their friends, as well as their pending friend requests. This is just be a small sample of the potentially bigger hazards.

Stalker: Facebook is also a stalker of your entire online activities. No we are not talking about you clicking on a like button and Facebook tracking it. Irrespective of whether you like it or not your online activities will be tracked. One way to escape from being tracked is to do your browsing in the inprivate or Incognito mode. For more details on the same check an indepth article on the same by Ashwin Anand http://bit.ly/9dSYey

The future of Facebook will depend on how it handles the issues discussed above else it will not be long before Facebook gets itself entangled in unnecessary mess. Remember it takes one sensitive issue to blow up the entire system and pull down Facebook. With greater power comes greater responsibility and greater scrutiny.

Facebook, Future!!!

With the unleashing of F8, Facebook team would be smacking their lips at the slew of opportunities that has opened up. Facebook would like leverage upon them to help it grow beyond as a social networking site over a period of time.

Search : Search is a holy grail that not many have been successful. Facebook has a good chance to be among the select few who have mastered this. Currently most of the search rankings system is based on the number of quality links that a site has. On the top of it if you add an algorithm to give weightage to the number of likes a particular article has search will throw up better results that are not only made of bots but also human intelligence.

Personalized search: One big advantage Facebook has is it can unleash personalized search. When I do a search results can be displayed as per the weightage my friends have given to different articles. For example if I am searching for review of iphone the results can be based on the likes that my friends had given for different review articles and sites. Not only does this make it personal but also more authentic.

Advertising: Facebook advertising platform can be extended to other third party sites in a big way. Facebook can provide with better targeted advertising services based on the personal likes of a user. The wall is full of information about an user and his friends, add to it the fact that the pattern of a users browsing behavior is also tracked making it much easier to display targeted advertising.

Facebook Currency: Facebook is currently testing a system called Facebook credits. This can be a real big push for sites that build their revenue models around virtual currency. Enter Facebook credit and user need not buy credits for each site or game. A uniform system of payment will open up new opportunities for sites that were traditionally relying on advertising as major source of revenue

Gaming is big business and Zynga has immensely benefited from the Facebook platform with revenue estimates to the north of $500 million by analysts. Gamers give real cash to buy virtual currency and trade in their games now this virtual currency could be replaced by Facebook Credits. Typically gaming companies pay around 10% to service providers like paypal or credit cards companies. Facebook credit can replace this entire system and it is expected that Facebook will take a 20%-30% cut but companies will immensely benefit from the fact that a uniformed system of payment will bring in more users.

Enterprise market: One needs to read more into the partnership between Microsoft and Facebook. The Microsoft docs application helps Facebook users to share documents among friends. I won’t be surprised if any announcements come targeting at enterprise market or on a platform.

I am sure there are many more interesting products that can be built around F8. It is going to be a problem of plenty for Facebook.

Why is Facebook sharing its user base? What does it stand to gain?

When protecting data about a user base with high level of secrecy is the norm of any industry, why is Facebook willing to share details about its users. What does Facebook stand to gain? Well the guys who found Facebook are after all not dumb right!

The benefits that Facebook stands to gain can be classified into short term and long term. We will look into the short term benefits in this post.

Short term benefits

A strong eco-system – As more and more sites embrace Facebook it stands to gain from the eco-system of applications that are built around it. The success of iphone is due to the applications that were built around it, Mozilla dominates the browser market despite presence of heavy weights like internet explorer and chrome exactly for the same reason. Now with a new web eco-system built around Facebook it will virtually stamp its presence everywhere.

Content aggregator - Currently More than 25 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month. When the like button was released Mark said that he expected 1 billion likes to be shared on the site within just 24 hours of launch and this number is likely to swell by each passing hour.

More user engagement – As more information is shared on the wall by its customer it will lead to a higher user engagement. The more the time users spend on the wall the better it is for Facebook. There will also be frequent returning visitors as users will be checking updates are available on the wall more frequently and more regularly.

Better brand recall – With a single stroke Facebook will all of a sudden be visible on all the websites and applications. Facebook already had 250,000 sites that were using Facebook connect and within a week of the F8 announcement another 50,000 sites have added Facebook plugins. As a brand what more can you ask for?

Membership boost – Not to forget the growth it will fuel for the giant social networking site. With all the branding and hype created and ease of signing up with any site it will not be long before every granny and nanny will become a member of the Facebook site.

Knows your mind map – This also helps to track its user behavior as to what the the tastes and likes of a user are. In essence all your browsing habits are now available with Facebook. All of a sudden all the bands and brands you like, all your shopping and weekend plans are now known to Facebook. Throw a bit of artificial intelligence and Facebook knows your entire mind map.

This is part 2 of the Facebook analysis. Part 1 - http://techbites.posterous.com/facebook-like-the-new-evil

RangDe – Give color to your life

I had been hearing about the Swarthma live in concert that is to happen on May 1 for quite sometime and when I got an invite to attend the press meet for media and bloggers I dropped in to see what the event was all about.

Rangde provides micro credit and has a unique model where they connect social investors with rural micro entrepreneurs and provide them with loans. It was amazing to know how anyone willing to invest just few hundred rupees can change the life of a rural house hold.

The Swarathma live in concert is being conducted to create more awareness and encourage more social investors to invest on rural micro entrepreneurs and more importantly hundred rupees from the ticket goes to a social investment in your name.

It is a inspiring and a great initiative to support rural entrepreneurs who don’t need obscene amount of loans or subsidies but just a few hundred rupees.

It was good to see Waheeda Rahman who is getting younger day-by-day as special guest. She had an interesting story to share as to how she got impressed on reading an article about Rangde on paper and called up the paper to get the contact details of Rangde founders and has been supporting their cause for more than a year now.

Soumitra Gosh of CSO partners said that he believed the 2000 micro entrepreneurs supported till date will create a moment of change, call it the butterfly effect.

These social assets that Rangde is creating is a positive step towards creating a change in the rural landscape of our country. In case you have few hundred extra rupees and would like to create a change in the life of a household visit  http://www.rangde.org/ and be the agent of change.

More details about the event and tickets are available at http://blog.rangde.org/2010/04/swarathma-live-in-concert/

Facebook - "Like" The New EVIL

Facebook has revealed ambitious plans for web domination with the F8 announcement and also has launched a direct war against Google challenging its web supremacy. We will be analyzing the same in a series of articles.

The social networking site is growing at a scorching pace both in terms of time spent and number of visitors. The core of this social networking sites strength lies in its 400 million loyal user base which is growing every second pushing it towards web dominance. Facebook is now attempting to leverage on the fact we humans are social animals.

With a small button called “Like” Facebook attempts to change the eco-system of the web. Facebook has provided website owners with access to a button called Like which can be placed in the sites pages. When a visitor clicks on this button it gets shared in his Facebook wall alerting his friends that he liked the particular page. This means there are chances his friends will also visit the site thus pushing more visitors the website. A simple yet powerful way to spread a word around and create a viral effect.

This means all sites will sooner or latter have the Like button in their pages to cash in on the viral effect that a visitor effectively bring in. Also when you visit a site if your friends have already visited the page it shows their pictures thereby increasing the attention span to the site.

Facebook connect also eliminates registration process required for websites by allowing them to login with their existing Facebook id. When a user signs in with FB id his personal details are shared with the website owners. For website owners it is a great boon as they don’t have to dish you with a long registration form and more importantly they get more in depth data about their visitors and also about their friends that they normally would not have access to.

It is good news for website owners and visitors who would like to share the content they read, but what does Facebook gain from this? Watch this space for more info.

Love, Entrepreneurship and Pain

I was recently invited to talk about entrepreneurship to a bunch of college students. My session was at 1.30 p.m right after lunch yaaawwwn... I knew it was going to be a real challenge to keep them and myself awake for the entire session and that was the genesis of my presentation entrepreneurship and love. As I started working on it I was stunned to find the common thread between entrepreneurship and love.

After the customary introduction as soon as I briefed the topic the entire auditorium giggled and laughed bringing life and energy into the room, power of love :-)

Just when I thought I can pull this off successfully a gentleman interrupted stating that he had a question for me. I was kinda confused as to what he was going to ask as I had not even begun my presentation. As I kept wondering... he asked me... You compare entrepreneurship with love than why is there failure in entrepreneurship?

Least of the question i expected. I took a long breath, an excuse to buy time and replied... Love does not usually have a fairy tale end, few last for months, some for years and very few last for lifetime. A comparison with vinnai thandi varuvaya and things fell in place. How true with entrepreneurship too!

The gentleman who asked me the question joined teaching profession fourteen years ago after his business did not do as good as he expected it to but even after all these years I could see passion and pain in him when he shared his story, fourteen years of pain.

He who said “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” either did not fail in love or fall in love.

When the entrepreneurship bug bites just like the love bug people start dreaming of rosy and they lived  happily ever after endings while many times reality is a sharp contrast. More than eighty percent of business shutdown by year three, and my gut feel is love would not fare any better if not worse.

As I try to dress up my resume after a close encounter with love an empty word document is what adores my desktop for more than a week now and I am able to better empathize with the question asked. The gentleman wanted to know if there was a fool proof way to be successful. If you have any tips and tricks for a rosy beautiful ending in love/entrepreneurship please do leave a comment.
